COVID-19 Forces GDFL To Cancel The 2020 Season
MEMPHIS (July 8, 2020)- Today GDFL chief executive officer Charles Thompson and chief operations officer Tracey Hardney-Scott put out a statement canceling the 2020 season. The first paragraph statement read as follows:
"Over the past few months, the Gridiron Developmental Football League leadership and staff have (sic) been monitoring worldwide developments related to COVID-19. With many states and regions recommending stay ay home orders and many restricting travel, we know that it is no longer practical nor ethical to continue with our 2020 season. The health and safety of our members is paramount. We are joining our community, state and other municipalities in working to limit and eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic by canceling this year's season."
Some teams including the 2019 runner-up Middle Tennessee Bulldawgs have expressed interest in playing a season independently. This will allow teams to be eligible for any bowl games in January.
The statement ended with, "Our concern for the health of our members, has led us to this painful decision to cancel the GDFL season. We want to do our part to help prevene further spread of the virus. Please continue to folow the GDFL on social media and our website for real-time updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are all in this together! Stay safe & informed."
